Halloween Cake or Halloween Painting?!

Is this a Halloween cake or a Halloween painting!? Or... maybe both? Either way, I think it’s the perfect way to celebrate the occasion!

The spookiest time of year is upon us!

To commemorate the occasion I set out to bake and decorate a Halloween cake that looks like a creepy painting.

I’ve painted my share of Halloween art and I’m no stranger to baking— having worked in a bakery at the ripe ol’ age of 16, I figured I was more than up to the task. Never mind that the age of 16 was also the last time I baked a cake…

Baking the Cakes aka the Making the “Canvas”

Since I wanted a bit of a larger surface to work with for this Halloween painting/cake, I decided to bake two 9x13 cakes and combine them.

I sliced off the puffy centers to give myself a flat surface to work on and then I was good to go!

Mixing the Frosting aka the “Paint” for the Halloween Cake

The goal for this cake was to mix up various colors of frosting to mimic paints. Since frosting is pretty thick I figured I could work them similar to oil paints.

To accomplish the varying shades of “paint” I used food coloring. Right off the bat, I knew I needed to mix up a ghoulish shade of green and some black.

Green was easy, but black was definitely trickier to mix up. In the end, I actually ended up with more of a really dark gray, but it did the job.

I used black (or dark gray) to cover the entire cake. I wanted to start the painting process with a uniform surface and did not want the cake to crumble as I was working it with my brushes.

Painting the Halloween Cake

Working with the frosting was a little more challenging than I was expecting. The fluffiness kept it from spreading smoothly and it dried out much faster than paint so I had to work quickly!

Luckily, this rougher look did not interfere with my choice of subject matter for this Halloween cake and only helped to amplify the undead vibes.

So, say hello to Frankenstein. Or... should I say Frankenstein's Monster.
